Toyota expands its hybrid lineup in South Africa with the new Fortuner Mild Hybrid, boasting a 2.8-litre diesel engine paired with 48V hybrid tech for improved fuel efficiency and power output. Enhanced with safety features and cosmetic upgrades, it antic
Toyota Fortuner Mild Hybrid: Japanese carmaker, Toyota has launched a new mild hybrid version of its most loved SUV, Fortuner in the South African auto market, Last year, the company also unveiled the Toyota Hilux Mid Hybrid in the market. Despite coming with the same engine, the new mild hybrid Fortuner performs much better in terms of fuel efficiency and power delivery. Check out more details below.
The SA spec Fortuner Mild hybrid comes equipped with a 2.8-litre diesel engine which comes coupled with a 48V hybrid technology. This powerhouse makes a combined power of 201 bhp and a peak torque of 500 Nm. The hybrid technology also allows the SUV to provide an improved fuel efficiency of 13.15 kmpl when compared to the purely ICE variant of the SUV. Transmission options for the diesel mill include a 6-speed automatic torque converter unit which is available in both 4WD and 2WD options.
Talking about the upgrades, the Fortuner MHEV launch in the South African market comes with Toyota Safety Sense ADAS Suite, new alloy wheels and a 360-degree surround camera.
The Fortuner MHEV looks similar to the India-spec Fortuner Legender variant. Apart from this, the SA spec Fortuner is differentiated with some additional colour options available than the Indian variant. Things inside the cabin remain unchanged, but there are minor tweaks that enhance the cabin experience.
The currently available Fortuner in India gets two engine options- 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel mill. The automaker has remained tight-lipped regarding the India launch of the Fortuner MHEV. However, some reports also suggest that the SUV will make its India debut by 2025.
Toyota's introduction of the mild hybrid version of the Fortuner in the South African market is a commendable move, blending power with efficiency. With its upgraded technology and enhanced fuel economy, it sets a promising precedent for future innovations. However, the anticipation for its arrival in India remains palpable, raising hopes for similar advancements to grace the roads of the subcontinent.
